James qualified as a chartered accountant with Spicer & Pegler. He joined Alexander's Discount PLC in 1985 and worked for a number of companies in the group, becoming Finance Director of Laing and Cruickshank Investment Management in 1989. On the sale of the company to UBS in 2004 he became Deputy Chief Operating Officer for UBS Wealth Management (UK) Ltd.
